Meet The Team!

  • Gary Buntain

The youngest of three children; my parents simply loved an active lifestyle, recreation and competing. It didn’t matter the sport, I lived it, slept it, devoured it. I was so lucky to be afforded opportunities to play a multitude of sports growing up.Little did I know but by participating in this diverse range of activities I would shape my understanding of movement science and specifically, force, power, flexibility and range of motion.

While swimming was a huge part of my life, it was hockey in which I hoped to realize an NHL dream. While I failed to realize my NHL dream, I was offered an opportunity to coach a swim team; I’ve never looked back.I built upon my previous experiences and added with sport science and coaching study. I coached and coached and coached. I untapped a fire within for helping people achieve greater heights within; it just happened to be in the pool.

When I was asked to do a bio I had no idea what to write. I feel very lucky to have good health and loving family. My swimming achievements: being lucky enough to coach thousand  of swimmers, especially the Nanaimo Riptides for 9 years. I’ve been very fortunate to be called coach of an Olympic top 16 swimmer, a Commonwealth Games Bronze medalist and thousands of other kids and adults who trusted my direction, invested in my instruction and were incredibly determined.I’ve been quietly working in the shadows for the last 8 years.

I look forward to helping you all achieve whatever your goal may be within the Royal Masters Swim Club. I look forward to working with you.

  • Blake Currie

Born and raised in Vancouver, BC, water sports have been my true love!

At 6 months old, I started swimming lessons with Aqua Ventures Swim Centre, graduating at 9 years old. Upon graduating I began my competitive career with Vancouver Pacific Swim Club (VPSC). Throughout my 9 years of swimming with VPSC, I swam at some of the highest levels possible that included swim meets across Canada and in the USA setting and maintaining numerous club records along the way.

Top highlights in my competitive career include a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke in 2018 at Canadian Junior Nationals in Winnipeg and then ending my VPSC age group career with a bronze medal in the 200m Breaststroke at the 2022 Senior Nationals in Montreal.

Other highlights include, being selected by Swimming Canada to represent Canada as one of the Canadian club swimmers at the Fina World Cup held in Toronto in October 2022. The event gave me the opportunity to meet and compete against some of the world’s top swimmers.

I am currently on a swim scholarship provided by the University of South Dakota (USD) as a Kinesiology and Sports Management major, specializing in exercise science. USD participates in division 1 athletics which is the highest level of athletic competition in the USA university system. My specialty events are breaststroke and individual medley.

I have worked and coached for my high school swim team and coached camps with younger kids just starting their competitive swimming careers. I cannot wait and am incredibly excited to work with everyone and help you all achieve your goals with the Royal Masters Swim Club.
